First Grade Writing Expectations
At the end of first grade, students should consistently write multiple sentences on a single topic, write in complete sentences, and use appropriate grammar, capitals, and ending punctuation. With guidance, successful writers can create a piece of writing with a clear beginning, middle and end. They can independently write a narrative with supporting details and create a simple expository piece. First graders should consistently write legibly with spaces between words. Their illustrations should be labeled and match their story.
