Social Emotional Learning

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is a core part of how NKSD supports the whole student, helping kids build the skills they need to manage their learning, navigate school life, and prepare for the future.
"Social-emotional learning teaches the whole child and leads to the development of powerful learning habits that include essential skills such as emotional management, collaboration, communication, and responsible decision-making. SEL skills impact both the readiness to learn and the ability to benefit from learning opportunities." Chris Reykal, Washington State Superintendent of Public Instruction

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) refers to the ongoing process that enables both children and adults to:

- Set and achieve positive goals
- Feel and show empathy for others

A Comprehensive Approach...
NKSD uses evidence-based SEL programs at every level.
Elementary schools use the RULER program from the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, which teaches students to recognize, understand, label, express, and regulate emotions using tools like the Mood Meter, class Charter, Meta-Moments, and the Blueprint.
Middle and high schools use Character Strong, which builds character traits and social-emotional skills including self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, responsible decision-making, and relationship skills.
